MINEOLA
— Police officers arriving at a home in Mineola had to shoot an
American Bulldog to reach a 55-year-old woman who was visiting friends
when the animal attacked her this afternoon.
Capt. Joyce Box
of the Mineola Police Department said her agency received a 911 call
about 12:45 p.m. in reference to a woman being attacked by a dog in the
caller’s backyard.
Capt. Box said Sarah Block was visiting in
the 1500 block of Robin Street when the 100-plus pound dog attacked
her, causing serious injuries to the woman.
“When our officer
arrived on the scene, he had to shoot the dog because it was in the
backyard with the victim and standing near her,” she said. “The officer
did not have a choice.” The dog was killed, she said.
Capt. Box said those on the scene reported Ms. Block suffered multiple bites on her arms, face and legs.
Police
officials said the woman was transported to Mother Frances Hospital in
Tyler where paramedics called ahead asking for a trauma team to be on
standby due to the injuries.
“Her arms were torn up pretty bad and she had bites to her face. I didn’t see how bad her legs were bitten,” Capt. Box said.
She added the owners of the dog had just got the dog this week.
“I
don’t know if they got the dog for Christmas or not, but this was a
full grown dog that took the victim down to the ground,” she said.
