court documents, while watching cartoons with Jernigan, Shelton fell
asleep. She woke up two to three hours to find the toddler had wandered
into the backyard where she kept her pit bull chained. The coroner says
Jernigan died of a bite to the head and neck.</span><br><br><font size="3">Summerville - </font><font class="StoryText"><font size="3">Thursday morning<bfont size="2"></bfont> a
toddler was killed by a family pet at Flowertown Village in
Summerville. 2-year-old Holden Jernigan wandered into the backyard of
his grandmother's house and was brutally attacked by the family's pit
bull. It happened on Barshay Drive at 10:00 a.m.</font><br><br><font size="3">The
child was deceased upon our arrival. The child was in the care of his
grandmother," said Sheriff Ray Nash, who was at the scene. "We've got
an investigative team that's working the case and I'm sure as more and
more of these details come to light, we'll know exactly what happened,
what transpired and what the appropriate response of this agency will
be."<br> <br>The dog, described as a brown 40 pound pit bull was taken
by animal control to the Francis Willis SPCA where it was put into
quarantine. Sheriff's deputies took blood samples from the dog's face.
It's not known yet whether the dog will be put down. Animal control
will ultimately decide the dog's fate.<br><br>"We're wanting to stay in
very close contact with them so that nothing happens to the dog before
we're able to complete our investigation," Nash said.<br><br>An autopsy
on young Holden Jernigan will be performed on Friday. This is the
second fatal pit bull attack on a child in Dorchester county this year.</font></font>
