Insurance Cancellation Notice in Florida

dobiekids 01-15-2007, 11:40 AM

I have an approximate 30-year relationship with Nationwide Insurance, having multiple policies.  I have had my current home in Florida insured with the company for 9 years.  I just received a letter notifying me that my policy would not be renewed due to the fact that there is a "Doberman Pincher on the premises".  It further states that if "the situation is corrected", and "the hazard is removed", I may return the signed and sworn statement saying I have "reliquished ownership" and it [they - I actually have 2 dobies] "has been removed from the premises", I will again be eligible for renewal.

My dobie "kids" are ages 7 and 5.  They are the same ages as my 2 grandchildren who live with me.  My dogs are well trained, and not agressive.  They have no history of being threatening, my 5.5 acres are totally fenced with a locked gate, yet that is not even a consideration?  To quote my veterinarian, "your dogs are well trained, and basically, wimps".

I worked for many years as a veterinary assistant.  I have worked with various breeds and mixes while they were at their worst (injured or ill).  An arbitrary declaration about any particular breed is absurd.  The most vicious dog I ever met was a mix that would be considered acceptable by insurer's standards.  The deciding factor for me in choosing the Doberman breed was their intelligence and stoic personalities, and very LOVING nature.  This has proven true in my dogs.  They love people and adore children.

Although my dogs are very docile, even my own grandchildren have been taught respect as well as kindness to any and all animals.  My Paso Fino is a big puppy, but the kids know to respect the fact that being accidently stepped on will hurt.  My point?  You don't wear flip-flops around a horse, and you don't play tug-of-war with a dog and his food bowl.  Any horse can kick, and any breed can bite.  It's the pet owners that should be carefully screened.  Across-the-board proclamations are a profound assault on all pet owners.

So, here I am, faced with trying to find coverage for my home.  I have made many phone calls, and as of yet, have not had success.  In Florida, we are facing so many issues with Homeowners Insurance, this just seems to be another problems on a growing list.  I was told by one agent to call back within 30 days of the end of my present policy (my Nationwide policy is cancelled as of May 28, 2007).  If anyone knows a company in Florida who accepts dobies, I would appreciate the information.  Having to choose between my dogs and my home is just ludicrous.

Try U.S.A.A. they have been a wonderful insurance company for us. My grandparents have owned chows and german shepards all my life (over 24yrs) and he hasnt had a problem with his insurance company. He said his is an out of state company so that is always a route to go if you absolutely cant get help. Good Luck and I hope one of the companies isnt so ignorrant and helps you

I told my insurance, Farmers about my Rott and they could care less but the twist is that I was to leave him off of the policy. Of course, that means that if he was to bite, I am completely liable. Now I have a Pitt AND a Rott! I make sure they are good boys and they go to work with me every day. My neighbors have met them as well. In the 3 years I have been here there has been no trouble. There is an insurance co for you. Trust me. I would not do business with a company that would not accomodate all three of us. If you can completely trust your dogs. We are in Wa where I guess they just passed a law that our insurance cannot discriminate. I need to call and see if I can get them on. Do you have Farmer's down there?
My only other suggestion is to look at pending bsl link or where is bsl and something is there about the hearing in WA about h/o insurance. Write some letters to your people over there using the info from the hearing. Good luck!
