COMMERCE CITY, Colorado is a special place. Although there are drug dealers, child molesters, kidnappers, murderers, and all sorts of real human problems in this city, there is one villian that takes precedence over them all.
The dog owner.
Dog owners in Commerce City are at risk after The Commerce City Gateway published the home addresses of registered pit bull owners.
New regulations targeting Pit Bulls caused these dog owners in Commerce City to spend hundreds of dollars to follow the laws. Toni Denham, one pit bull owner, said she spent $700 to comply with the new rules and thought she was being a good citizen.
The paper's editor stands by her decision to report the information, stating the newspaper was trying to protect people from dangerous dogs.
Kathy McIntyre, the 'Gateway' editor, said she wanted people to be able to use caution in areas where pit bulls live. McIntyre said her research showed pit bull attacks in Commerce City happened mostly at homes where the animals live.
The names on the list are part of the public record. There's no law against publishing them.
Commerce City banned Pit Bulls, but a few dozen were grandfathered in and allowed to stay.
So, take note dog owners. Your days of privacy are over. If you own a dog that your city decides looks like the wrong breed, expect to give up all semblance of privacy. Everyone in your town will know where you live and what dogs you have, and of course, it won't be too much of a stretch for the few extreme dog haters to pay your pooch a visit and toss a deadly treat over the fence.
Does society need to be in fear of dogs and their owners, or do dog owners need to fear society? My vote. The latter.
